Trust Flow
Understanding Trust Flow
Trust Flow works by tracing the link graph backward from a curated seed set of manually reviewed, highly trusted websites — think major universities, government institutions, and established media organizations. The closer your site is to these seed sites in terms of link hops, the higher your Trust Flow score. A site linked directly from a trusted seed domain scores higher than one that is four link hops removed. The metric is scored from 0 to 100, with most websites falling between 10 and 50.
Majestic pairs Trust Flow with a companion metric called Citation Flow, which measures the raw volume of links pointing to a site regardless of quality. The ratio between Trust Flow and Citation Flow — called the Trust Ratio — is a powerful indicator of link profile health. A site with Citation Flow of 40 and Trust Flow of 35 has a healthy ratio near 1:1, while a site with Citation Flow of 60 and Trust Flow of 10 has an unhealthy profile dominated by low-quality links.
Trust Flow is also available at the topical level through Majestic's Topical Trust Flow feature, which categorizes a site's trust across subject areas like Business, Health, Technology, or Education. This granularity helps identify whether a potential link source is authoritative in your specific industry. A link from a high Trust Flow site in an irrelevant topic category carries less topical relevance than one from a moderate Trust Flow site in your exact niche.
Why Trust Flow Matters
Trust Flow provides a quality-focused lens for evaluating backlinks that raw link counts and Domain Authority alone cannot offer. Two sites may have identical numbers of referring domains, but vastly different Trust Flow scores — the one whose links trace back to reputable sources through shorter paths will typically outperform in rankings. This metric helps SEO practitioners distinguish genuinely authoritative link profiles from those inflated by spam, PBNs, or low-quality directories.
In competitive analysis, Trust Flow reveals the real strength behind competitor rankings. A competitor with a moderate number of high-Trust-Flow backlinks often outranks sites with far more links of lower quality. Identifying these high-trust link sources in your competitor's profile provides a roadmap for your own link-building outreach, focusing effort on the types of authoritative sites that move rankings rather than chasing volume from low-value sources.
Best Practices
- Maintain a Trust Flow to Citation Flow ratio above 0.5 — ratios below this threshold indicate a backlink profile weighted toward low-quality or spammy sources
- Use Majestic's Topical Trust Flow to identify link-building targets within your specific industry category rather than pursuing generic high-authority domains
- Prioritize link prospects with Trust Flow scores above 20 — sites below this threshold rarely pass meaningful trust signals
- Compare your Trust Flow against the top 5 ranking competitors for your primary keywords to establish a realistic benchmark for your link-building goals
- Audit your link profile for referring domains with Citation Flow significantly higher than Trust Flow — these are potential spam sources worth investigating for disavow consideration
- Track Trust Flow changes monthly as a leading indicator of link profile health — sudden drops may indicate lost links from authoritative sources that need to be investigated
