Position zero is the colloquial term for Google's featured snippet — a special SERP element that appears above the standard organic results, displaying a direct answer extracted from a web page. The term "position zero" reflects its placement before position one, giving the source page maximum visibility without needing to hold the traditional top-ranking spot. Featured snippets appear in several formats: paragraph snippets (the most common, ~70% of snippets), list snippets (ordered or unordered), table snippets, and video snippets.

Google selects featured snippet content algorithmically by identifying pages that concisely and directly answer the query. The source page typically already ranks on page one — Ahrefs data shows that over 99% of featured snippets are pulled from pages ranking in positions 1 through 10.
