Local Pack

The Local Pack (also called the Map Pack or 3-Pack) is the block of three local business listings that appears prominently in Google search results for queries with local intent, accompanied by a map. It is the most valuable SERP feature for local businesses, as it appears above traditional organic results and captures a significant share of clicks.

Understanding Local Pack

The Local Pack is a SERP feature that displays the top three local business results for queries Google determines have local intent. It appears with a Google Maps snippet and shows each business's name, star rating, review count, address, phone number, hours, and category. Queries like plumber near me, "best Italian restaurant," or even generic terms like "dentist" trigger Local Packs when Google detects that the searcher's intent is to find a nearby business.

Local Pack rankings are determined by a separate algorithm from organic search, based on three primary factors Google has publicly confirmed: relevance (how well the business matches the query), distance (proximity of the business to the searcher's location or the location specified in the query), and prominence (how well-known and authoritative the business is online, measured through reviews, citations, backlinks, and web presence). Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the foundation — without a verified, optimized GBP listing, you cannot appear in the Local Pack at all.

The Local Pack is displayed above the traditional ten blue links, making it the first organic-adjacent feature most users see for local searches. On mobile devices, the Local Pack can dominate the entire visible screen. Google has experimented with showing more or fewer results, but the three-result format has remained standard. Clicking "More places" expands to the full Local Finder, which shows additional businesses on a larger map — but the vast majority of clicks go to the three businesses displayed in the initial pack.

Why Local Pack Matters

For local businesses, the Local Pack is arguably the single most important piece of SERP real estate. Studies from BrightLocal and other research firms consistently show that the Local Pack receives 42% or more of clicks for local queries, far outperforming the organic results below it. Being in the top three versus position four (which requires a click to "More places") can mean the difference between dozens of daily calls and inquiries versus virtually none.

The Local Pack also drives high-intent actions directly from the SERP. Users can call the business, get directions, visit the website, and read reviews without ever leaving Google. For service-area businesses like plumbers, electricians, and lawyers, the Local Pack is often their primary lead generation channel. Investing in Local Pack optimization — through GBP optimization, review generation, local link building, and citation management — delivers some of the highest ROI in all of SEO.
