Understanding Sitemap

An XML sitemap is a structured file that provides search engines with a roadmap of your website's important pages. While search engines can discover pages through crawling links, a sitemap ensures they know about all pages, including those that might be harder to discover through normal crawling. Sitemaps can include additional metadata like last modification date, change frequency, and priority hints. For larger sites, sitemap indexes can reference multiple sitemap files. Google supports various sitemap types including standard web pages, images, videos, and news content.

Why Sitemap Matters

Sitemaps help ensure search engines discover and index all your important pages, especially for large websites, new sites, or sites with complex architectures. While not required for indexing, sitemaps are considered a best practice and can speed up discovery of new and updated content.

Best Practices

• Include only canonical, indexable pages
• Update sitemaps when content changes
• Keep sitemaps under 50,000 URLs or 50MB
• Submit sitemaps through Google Search Console
• Use accurate lastmod dates when possible
• Monitor for sitemap errors in Search Console
